Demographics of Norway

The small country of Norway is home to only 4,660,539 Norwegian people (CIA, 2009). This population is only slightly larger than the population of the state of Kentucky in the United States (quickfacts.census.gov). The estimated growth of Norway’s population is only 0.341 percent (CIA, 2009). This small percentage will be used to Norway’s advantage when competing for the Olympic bid because it ensures the rest of the world that the nation will still be able to accommodate for visitors in the years to come without the concern of its own people expanding too much.

The ethnicity factor of Norway’s demographics is rather scant. 94.4 percent of Norway’s residents are of Norwegian descent, while only 3.6 percent are of other European descent and 2 percent are derived from other races (CIA, 2009). In light of the 2022 Winter Olympic games, Oslo goal is to broaden the ethnic horizons of its inhabitants by unifying the vast variety of cultures from all around the world.

In other demographic statistics, the predominant religion of Norway is the Church of Norway (CIA, 2009).  Also, the literacy rate, characterized by the percent of the population over the age of 15 that can read and write, is 100 percent among both males and females in Norway (CIA, 2009).

While Norway may be small and culturally incomparable to nations such as the United States, the Oslo Olympic Association is hoping to have the chance to embrace cultures from around the world in the Olympics to enhance the nation of Norway in this way.
